David Copperfield by Charles Dickens

The story takes place in London and its suburbs in the 19^th century during the Victoria era (1837-1901)

Summary

David lives in his father’s house with his nanny and his mother when this one remarries. Her husband sends David in a boarding school. On the daytime of his birthday, he learns his mother died. So he comes back home. At the age of 10 years old, his father-in-law sends him to London to work because he has to survive lonely. David lends a room in Micawber’s house but they decide to leave London one week later. Desperate, he goes to his aunt who sends him in a famous school. When he goes to see his nanny and her family, he learns Steerforth, his old friend, goes away with the fiancée of his nanny’s nephew. When he comes back home, he meets Agnes, the lawyer’s daughter of his aunt, and Uriah Heep who keeps the place of the lawyer with his airs of humility. He meets Dora, an Agnes’ friend, and he marries her. When she dies, David decides to travel and writes books. When he comes back, the young man puts away Uriah with Mr.Micawber’s proofs and he realises he loves Agnes so he marries her.

Main Characters :

David Copperfield : it’s the hero of the book. During the book, we saw his evolution with his feelings. His life is the same of the author, Charles Dickens.

 Miss Trotwood named Miss Betsey : she is the aunt of David who look after him.

Mr Micawber : he help David to survive in London and to prove Uriah Heep is a bad man.

Steerforth : he is a friend of David but he goes away with the fiancée of a David’s friend.

Uriah Heep : he seems to be a very humble personn but he want to manage Wickfield’s bussiness.

Agnes Wickfield : she is the daughter of Miss Trotwood’s lawyer later she become the wife of David.

Interest of the book and my opinion

It is a book about the society during the Victoria era. I learn how is the life in the 19^th century. I like David because he was intelligent with feelings I had when I have got his age.

I enjoy reading this book because it is very interesting and I think it was one of the best stories written by Charles Dickens.

The reverend Martin Luther King Jr, born in Atlanta, the United States on January 15th, 1929 and murdered on April 4th, 1968 to Memphis, was an afro-American Baptist minister, militating for the civil rights of the Blacks in the United States and a political activist.

Most of these rights were promoted by the American law.

He pronounces one of the most famous speeches on August 28th, 1963 in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington during the walking(march) for the employment(use) and the freedom: " I have a dream ". He met John Fitzgerald Kennedy who brought him his support in the fight against the racial discrimination.

Martin Luther King becomes the youngest Nobelist of the peace in 1964 for his peace fight against the racial segregation then very strong in the United States and for the peace.

LAURA D. "Mes chères études, étudiante, 19 ans, job alimentaire, prostituée."

This book is unfortunately realistic, it shows how much the life is expensive. How the students have evil to find a job in addition of university, by which means they try to pay their invoices and their studies, how they manage it? In this book, we will follow  LAURA's life, a student who try to succed his life..

From a modest family Laura leaves home ,to to settled with her (boyfriend) Manu,  who's rich but which does'nt want to pay the invoices of the apartment! So, Laura have to pay the invoices and her sutdies only with her MONEY. So, She goes prostitue herself to have money. It have been started with simple ambiguous conversation on the telephone which will bring back to her 5 euros/hour, then it have been continued by true meetings which will lead Laura to a forfeiture. She'll feel salts, soiled, emptied, useless, and ALONE. She losed nearly 10 kg, and she will eat only when she has earned money, this disgusting money she will have gained with her own body.

The worst in all that, is which is a true story. And there is not only Laura which has undergoes this kind of daily torture, no, because 40.000 students in France are concerned !

Here is a real problem which one must solve!

My view: This film is really the natural disasters are imagined .. the only fault I would put that it is too long!
